This trek starts at 2.400m on Etna North, nearby Mt. Pizzillo. We visit the famous hornitos of 1947, where we enter one of the small cones. Proceeding in lava fields we arrive at the icy cave called Grotta del Gelo above the town of Bronte. This is the most southern glacier of Europe. With torches, ropes and warm fleeces we enter in the complete dark cave to admire the ice formations in the inside. We walk back following an old smugglers path to a second cave called Grotta dei Lamponi, the “Raspberry cave”. We will follow this lava flow a few hundredth meters beneath the earth! Back in the day light, our path crosses Pine Forests and lava flows following a forest guardian’s path to Rifugio Brunek. This hike is difficult as we have to cross several lava fields. It takes 7 hours giving an impression of the expansion of Mt. Etna, discovering lovely landscapes, caves and wild orchids.
