Starting
at Nicolosi, Etna South we take the 4x4 up to 2.500m where the craters
of eruption 2002 are situated. Now we start walking up in
the sandy path passing by the lava flows of 2001 and 2002 nearby the
South East crater. We turn up to the Central Crater and Bocca Nuova
where we catch a sight into the mouth of mother Earth, spitting out
thick gas clouds. Once on the highest top we start our descent in direction
north, passing the fractures that opened in November 2002 to the Vulcano
logical Observatory. Our trek brings us along the rim of the Valle
del Leone/Bove with marvellous panoramic views to the
Peloritan mountains and Taormina, the straight of Messina far behind.
The walk ends nearby Rifugio Citelli lying on the famous panoramic
road “Mareneve” means “Sea and Snow”. This
hike is moderate to strenuous and takes about 7 hours, climbing up
from South descending on North. It gives you a complete impression
of this enormous volcanic mountain.
