Starting from Etna south we take the cable car up to 2.500m. We start hiking up to the craters of 2001 eruption from where we have a stunning view down to the Ionian Coast and the Strait of Messina, overlooking the old caldera of Mt. Etna.

From approx.. 2.650m we start our ”moonwalk”  down following a steep sand rim for more than 1.000m altitude. We reach the lava flows of 1991-93 eruption that filled up the antic caldera transforming completely the landscape. Here  we can see how nature comes back to life within short years and the guide tells us  the story of the deviation of the lava flow that happily saved the town Zafferana Etnea.
